Whitley Bay has changed over time, as all "seaside" towns have done, with a move away from the traditional British seaside holiday, Whitley Bay is moving through a transitional period. North Tyneside Council have announced a £60 million regeneration scheme for the town, and despite much debate and many consultations with the public, the Council is indeed moving on its plans to redevelop the old Spanish City 'Island'
The plans will shortly be submitted to the planning team and will be available for the public to view. In the meantime the Council are emphasising the move towards a cultural entertainments structure for the regeneration programme.
During the Summer months, when the sun shines, the beaches are a great place to go. Whitley Bay benefits from a long stretch of clean golden sands and has a blue flag award. Lifeguards patrol the beach and bathing in the clear waters is safe although a little chilly!
During Winter months the sea creates a dramatic scene, with great breakers (waves). That's why the O'Neil Surfing Championships have been held in Tynemouth over recent years.
Whitley Bay also has a more 'traditional' high street with niche shops that you wouldn't find anywhere else, aswell as some familiar high street brands.
Whitley Bay certainly has a great deal to offer visitors & its position is ideal to explore the North East.
